What Makes Us Fat

Anyone who wants to resolve any problem, he has to know the cause of problem above all. It is the same by losing weight. We have to know why we are growing fat first, then, we can suit the remedy to the case.

Unhealthy eating combined with sustained lack of activity usually causes obesity. You take more calories than you burn everyday, your body then puts on fat. This is the common sense behind obesity. Further more, according to genetics, obesity could also be inherited from family members. If your family has a history of weight problems, then you should watch your weight very carefully.

However, bad eating habits are the top reason why people become obese. With neither the time, nor the inclination to control one’s meals, there’s no wonder people get fat all over the world. People are always busy, but this is not the excuse that we have to eat junk food all the time. Fast foods may look good, but they contain too high fat for your body. Thing is, a single burger is worth a whole meal, but your body does not judge the situation this way. Your stomach will never be filled by a regular burger, so it will keep asking for more, despite the fact that your body does not need more burgers.

Many people try diets in order to lose a few pounds. But the fact is, most of them return to their old lifestyle and eating habits easily, which almost always means the lost weight would be regained rapidly. Moreover, the body will get used to these diets after long time diet taking, and after that it will be much harder for you to lose weight. Strictly taking diets means you have to refuse a lot of delicious foods, which will make these foods much more attractive than usual. The result is, most of the diets takers give up easily.

At the end of this article, I would say, keep a healthy lifestyle is the most effective way to keep you fit. Don’t eat foods with high calories too often, do enough sport exercises regularly and better on a daily basis. If you already have weight problems, then you’d better try some products like Proactol fat binder, which won’t ask you to eat diets strictly. I’ve already seen too many people tried diets and gave up. Results are they regained more fat than before.

Why Are We So Overweight?

I suppose the easiest answer is fast food, but the problem extends out to so much more. Yes, the prevalence of fast food restaurants certainly doesn’t help. As Morgan Spurlock showed us with painful reality in his movie, “Super Size Me”, fast food menus offer us a heaping helping of fat, cholesterol, and calories. I highly recommend watching this movie if you find yourself addicted to McDonald’s - you could very well change your mind after you see it!

At any rate, many of these restaurants are now offering health-conscious choices including salads, potatoes instead of French fries, yogurt, and grilled meats instead of fried meats. So with these items now included on their menu, why aren’t we losing weight? The answer lies within our choices. Those choices extend to home life as well.

Many people live horridly busy lifestyles, and they more often than not opt for pre-packaged foods that contain high amounts of salt, fat, and other unhealthy components that contribute toward weight gain. We tend to maintain a mostly sedentary lifestyle choosing to watch a favorite television program after dinner rather than going out for a walk like they used to do decades ago.

This type of life style unfortunately is being learned by our children as well. When I was young, we couldn’t wait to get through dinner so we could go outside and play a game of kick the can as the sun went down. We rode our bikes everywhere and only watched television when “The Brady Bunch” or “The Partridge Family” was on. Hey, we had our priorities!

Today, you’re more likely to find kids on the computer or in front of the TV with a video game controller in their hands. Kids know more about the story line on Desperate Housewives than many of their housewife mothers. They can tell you about all of the new products being offered through commercials they see in between their programs. In fact, the average child these days will watch more than 15 hours of television each and every week.

List of Health Problems Because of Obesity

Obesity is because of eating too many calories and not getting enough physical activities to burn those calories. Excess calories are deposited in the body as fat.

Obesity increases the risk of several health problems like high blood pressure, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, heart diseases, stroke, gout, gallstones, colon cancer, sleep apnea and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

High blood pressure:

Blood vessels carry blood from heart to different organs of the body and back to heart. The blood vessels have thick but elastic walls for proper flow of blood. Decrease in elasticity of blood vessel wall increases pressure on blood passing through these vessels. Obesity decreases elasticity of blood vessels causing increase in blood pressure.

Diabetes in obesity:

Insulin is required for entry of carbohydrate into cells from the blood. The carbohydrate in cell is utilized for energy production by the cells. Excess deposition of fat in the body causes insulin resistance, because of which, insulin cannot perform its function and sugar cannot enter into cells and remain in blood. This leads to diabetes or high blood sugar. High sugar in blood leads to complications in various organs like kidney, eyes, blood vessel, and heart.

Atherosclerosis or fatty deposits in blood vessels:

Obesity is associated with increase in levels of bad cholesterol in blood. Increase cholesterol in blood causes atherosclerosis or deposition of cholesterol on the walls of blood vessels. Atherosclerosis reduces the elasticity of blood vessels, narrows blood vessels and decreases blood flow through these vessels. All these changes lead to increased risk of heart disease and stroke.

Heart diseases:

Coronary arteries are the blood vessels that supply blood to heart muscles. Atherosclerosis or fatty deposits in coronary arteries in obesity decreases blood supply to heart muscles. Decreased oxygen supply and blood flow to heart can cause angina (chest pain) and complete blockage of blood flow to heart can cause heart attack.

Stroke or paralysis:

Atherosclerosis in arteries of brain can reduce blood supply to the brain. This decrease in blood flow can result in stroke or paralysis.

Arthritis:

Obesity and overweight increases the load on the joints such as the knee, hip and lower back, which can cause the breakdown of cartilage in the joint. Cartilage is a cushion like structure in a joint required for smooth movement of joints. Breakdown of cartilage in obesity results in joint pain and stiffness and other features of osteoarthritis.

Gout:

A type of arthritis caused by the accumulation of uric acid crystals in joints. Obesity is associated with increased accumulation of these solid crystal-like masses in joints, which causes inflammation and pain.

Sleep apnea:

Overweight and excess fat around neck causes narrowing of airways and leads to sleep apnea. In sleep apnea, person snores heavily and stops breathing for short periods, which results in frequent awakening at night.

Fatty liver disease:

Obesity increases the risk of developing liver disease called fatty liver disease due to accumulation of fat in liver.

Gallbladder disease and gallstones:

Obesity increases cholesterol deposition in gall bladder, which can lead to formation of gallstones.

SEXUAL MATURATION AS EARLY PUBERTY

A year ago during my daughter’s health control, who actually is seven years old, for pollen allergy suspect, the doctors noticed the beginning of secondary sexual characters as: breast growing, pubic hair and consequently I told the doctors that my child was having by several months heavy sweating too.

The doctors inspecting the problem advised me to monitor the early transformation best known as:“Early puberty”.

After the initial sense of anxiety and confusion, I though to myself: “It’s unbelievable, my little child is becoming already a woman”.

I decided to assure a healthy future to my daughter following with much attention the endocrinologist’s advices as:

• Pelvic Ecography: to monitor the ovaries, uterus and follicles dimension to see if the child is ready for menstruation.

• Left wrist X ray: to control the bone growing since if becomes too soon there is the probability the child’s eight stops with the beginning of menstruation, risking to remain under-average against to her classmates.

• Blood exam: hormonal dosage DEHA-S (sexual hormones. By checking the hormones dosage to value the function sexual glands either female or male), glycemia and diabets.

The early puberty also involves the children from the age of 9 to 14 years old, revealing with following signs:

- developing armpit, pubic and facial hair;

- penis growing and testicular enlargement.

The early puberty for little girls begins between the age of 8 to 13 years old. While for the female eight amount begins with the growing the breast, for male the growing stars at mid premature development.

Psychological consequences.

An important phase and most of all not to under estimate is the “psychological disturbs” which may provoke the early puberty in the child, who faces physical transformations for which still is not ready and causes in her a sense of diversity and isolation against her classmates.

After learning that also my child is in the early puberty phase, a question which worried me was: “How to explain to my little child her sexual transformation? To my baby who still plays with dolls and loves the fairy tales? The answer I achieved to find only in the deep of my heart, creating with her a very confidential and lovely dialogue, explaining her in clear and comprehensive words , what was happening at her body.

We can do a lot to monitor the early puberty following few, but precise rules:

- to control the body weight, avoiding to become obese or overweight;

- to educate the children to a daily physical activity;

- to insert in their hypercaloric diet, meat without xeno-estrogens (giving

hormones to fatten and grow the animals rapidly) as: chicken, beef and

pork’s meat.

These chemical substances are present in:

- DDT (pesticide for agricultural production);

- industrial detersive;

- canned food.

The overexposition of such hormones causes an increase of women cancer to:

- breast, uterus, endometrium and ovaries;

and for men to:

- prostate, testicular and male sterility.

So, to prevent the early puberty:“WATCH OUT TO THE BIOLOGICAL CLOCK”.

Weight Loss - How Do You Know You’re Overweight?

Eat this, eat that! Do this do that! We’ve always complied to what our parents always drilled into us right from the young age.

Attained good Education and good Morals to go with it. Now, the real life (Adult life) starts, but because of the hustling and bustling, looking for a good job, house and perhaps a perfect love one, this has taken its toll on most of us. You can hardly find time to sit, let alone eat, hence you’re as THIN as ever.

You keep getting all these compliments from acquaintances and friends on how thin you look and how well you’ve maintained your figure. You will accept these compliments, but deep down inside of you, you know you had nothing to do with it. It’s not some “MAGIC Weight Loss Program”. It’s just that you’re far too busy trying to live a better life, but as result had to compromise along the way.

Okay, now you’ve found the job you really want and of course there comes along the house (Property) you really want too. Now life is rosy, good, Fun. You’re more relaxed to the extent that now, you’ve now set up a time-table of meals to have consumed on each day of the week.

Life couldn’t be any better, as now, you’ve also found a lover, a companion. Set up a home together and hence ultimately start raising a family as you feel you’ve attained all your life ambitions.

Now you’re in the routine of; waking up - drop the kids in school- go to work - call partner at work to assure him or her everything went all right - go home after work, oh I forgot, go to the shops for few groceries on your way home - get the meal ready, and eat - go to bed. You might not live your life in this order, but at least you get the drift.

You’ve now fall in this pattern of routine until one day one noticed your favourite jeans and top (don’t tell me you haven’t got one, as we all have one), you know, the ones you always want to wear out shopping, to the cinema, staying at home in, and perhaps visiting the in-laws in, are slightly tighter than usual. What do you do, “Hey, honey, we need to go shopping for some clothes”.

What have you just done there? You’ve just accommodated your new waist size, you’ve just accepted that you’re comfortable with this new weight. Indeed, what you should have done when you found that your favourite clothes are tighter than usual is: “TRY AND FIT BACK INTO THEM” whichever way or means possible.

But the sad truth is, almost all of us are guilty of this. And we continue to keep our slim, now too-tight clothes somewhere in the corner our of bedrooms in the hope of fitting into them some time in the near future. But you know what? You never will, but for just a handful of us will eventually do.

So, let me ask the above question again. ”How Do You Know You’re Overweight? The answer is, we all know this all the time as the signs are there for us to see and for us to do some thing about it. But we hardly do, maybe because of our busy schedules or just in plain “DENIAL”.

I bet when you saw the above headlines, I bet you thought you’re going to be reading something like, “11 points to look out for….blah blah blah”.

The bottom line is, the only way to know you’re overweight is by you “ADMITTING” it and immediately doing something about it.

Helpful Information About Lap Band Surgery And Adjustable Gastric Band Surgery

The adjustable gastric banding surgeries, including Lap Band surgery, is a form of restrictive weight loss surgery designed for obesity patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or greater or between 35 and 40 for those who have conditions that are known to improve with weight loss. The Swedish adjustable gastric band differs greatly from the Lap-Band because it wasn’t designed for use with keyhole laparoscopic surgery. An American company, INAMED Health, designed the BioEnterics LAP-BAND Adjustable Gastric Banding System, which was originally introduced in Europe in 1993.

If someone has a dependency on alcohol or drugs, they won’t be eligible for adjustable band surgery. And mentally disabled or emotionally unstable people won’t be considered for lap band surgery. However failure of dietary or weight-loss drug therapy for more than one year can make one eligible for the adjustable gastric band procedure.

Inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract like ulcers, esophagitis or Crohn’s disease do not make someone a good candidate for lap band surgery. In general, gastric banding, including the Lap Band procedure and weight loss system, is indicated for people whose Body Mass Index is above 40, or those who are 100 pounds (45 kg) or more over their estimated ideal weight according to the 1983 Metropolitan Life Insurance Tables or those between 30 to 40 with co-morbidities which may improve with weight loss (those are: blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, and arthritis).

During surgery the surgeon uses a specialized needle to avoid damage to the port membrane. Compared to other weight loss surgeries gastric dumping syndrome problems do not occur in lap band surgeries because no intestines are removed or re-routed. When fluid is introduced into the stomach the lap band expands, placing pressure around the outside of the stomach and this decreases the size of the passage in the stomach and restricts the movement of food.

Lap band or gastric band placement, unlike the traditional malabsorptive weight loss surgery (called Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, and the biliopancreatic and duodenal switch) does not cut or remove any part of the digestive system. There are many port designs and they may be placed in various positions based on the preference of the lap band surgeon. Unlike those who have procedures such as Roux -en -y gastric bypass surgery, duodenal switch or biliopancreatic diversion, it’s unusual for gastric band patients to experience nutritional deficiencies or malabsorption of any micronutrients.

Many doctors make the first adjustment between six to eight weeks after surgery to allow for the stomach - time to heal. After that the ‘fills’ are performed as needed. The patient may be prescribed a liquid-only diet, followed by soft foods and then solid foods for a specified length of time. Each surgeon and manufacturer will have their own orders and specifications. And during pregnancy, deflation should be considered if morning sickness is experienced.

The initial weight loss in gastric banding is slower than with Roux-en-y gastric bypass surgery but statistics indicate that over a five year period the weight loss outcome is very similar. The amount of weight lost during the months after surgery will depend on the individual and their personal circumstances, their motivation, and mobility.

Other complications of adjustable gastric band surgery include ulceration and irritated stomach tissue. A common occurrence for lap band patients is regurgitation of the non-acidic swallowed food from the upper pouch, which is commonly known as productive burping. And this is not normal.

Occasionally, the narrow passage into the lower part of the stomach may become blocked by a large portion of food that has not been chewed. Other adjustable gastric band post-surgery complications that can occur are: abdominal pain, loss of strength, infection, fever, hernia, pain, chest pain, incisional infection, incision pain, and even death.

Before you undergo any lap band weight loss surgery or adjustable gastric band procedure, get fully informed by your doctor or lap band or gastric band surgeon. Make sure if you’re traveling away from home for surgery to consider the travel time and related travel expenses for both the surgery and follow-up appointments. Please be aware that lap band surgery or adjustable band surgery can have some serious adverse effects and complications. You may want surgery closer to home in the event you need to make numerous trips due to these complications.
